Scattered Memories

Along with the creative repurpose ideas, these little mannequin heads remind me of my mom. One particular memory comes to mind. Here is a story of my mom and a wig as told by Pop (my dad) . . .

It was a weekend night at the bowling alley somewhere in Philadelphia circa 1960. Pop loved all sports and would often take my mom to the bowling alley on double dates with other couples. One night, back in the 60’s and I assume before they were married, Mom got all dolled up, donned a cute bobbed wig, grabbed her gear, and went bowling with Pop,

They went quite frequently, so, they each had their own bowling balls, bags, and shoes. I remember seeing those supplies in our spare bedroom closet when I was a kid. Even back then, I loved to rummage through closets. I was amazed with the discovery of new things and always had lots of questions.

Anyway, on this night, there was some beer involved mostly on Pop’s end as Mom wasn’t much of a drinker. As Pop told the story, Mom was more of a beginner bowler but she did well. On this night, she had her ball and was preparing to release it down the lane when she slipped and fell. The ball bounced loudly but not as remarkably as her wig did when it fell off of her head as she landed on the slick wooden floor.

Now, they say opposites attract. And that is true for my mom and dad.

Pop was always the life of the party. He was at his best in the center of the room. He would say hello to everyone, everywhere, every time. Mom, not so much. She was friendly but very shy and she was very nervous around new people. So, imagine her horror as her feet come out from under her. The horror was only magnified as that wig left her head. And then, I am certain, Pop could not control his laughter. And if you knew Pop, you know how contagious his laugh was, Poor Mom.

Though her embarrassment would return every time she told the story, it always ended with a smirk, a smile, and a laugh. “I was mortified,” she would say with a pained look. “I could have killed your father,” was always the next sentence. And then she would roll her eyes as she did. Then a shake of her head and she would laugh. “That man!” Always with a laugh.

So, I decided to decoupage this mannequin head with some sweet nostalgic memoirs. My home is filled with memories of family and friends. There is nothing like catching a glimpse of an item that brings back fond memories. This project will sit on a shelf above my work area in my office.

How to Decoupage a Mannequin Head

Mannequin heads come in all types of shapes, sizes, and materials. The most economically prices are the styrofoam heads. These were designed to display wigs and can be found used in thrift stores or purchased new from manufacturers and beauty supply stores.

The mannequin head that I am using in this project is styrofoam and does not have any facial features. I found this other one with facial features that I will save for another project. For this project though, I don’t think the facial features will be as noticeable because of the variety of textures and colors I will use to decoupage the surface. I will save this more detailed mannequin head to decoupage or paint in monochrome. She’s pretty cool though, right?

I gave the mannequin head a gentle cleaning with warm soapy water to make sure she was clean. She had some dust and dirt on the surface. It is important to have a clean surface when you decoupage an item. Be sure to use just warm water as hot water could affect the integrity of the styrofoam. When purchasing from a thrift store, you really don’t know the age or history of an item and older styrofoam can be very delicate. So be gentle when you clean your mannequin head. Here she is all cleaned up and ready for her makeover.

Decoupage Medium

My preferred decoupage medium is a product called Mod Podge which is made by Plaid Paints.

You can buy Mod Podge at Walmart, local craft stores and online. It’s a safe product and super easy to use. It is essentially a self sealing glue used to apply and seal fabrics, paper, and many other mediums.

Here are a few past projects using Mod Podge:

I gathered a variety of memorabilia to decoupage onto my mannequin head with Mod Podge. I grabbed items that I brought home from travel, greeting cards and notes from special friends, artwork from my grandson, and a handprint from one of my sons just to name a few.

Using a paintbrush, brush a liberal amount of Mod Podge onto the mannequin head. Work in one small area (about a 2-3 inches square).

Lay your item onto the mod podge and gently smooth it onto the Mod Podge with your fingers or the brush.

Be careful on curved surfaces, like this mannequin head, that you cut small slices in your paper to help the paper fit the curved surface.

Lay your paper onto the Mod Podge.

Smooth with your fingers or the brush.

Apply a liberal coat of Mod Podge over your paper to seal. Use your brush to smooth or tap the paper into place and to remove any wrinkles. Be careful. As your paper gets wetter, it will tear more easily. I usually tap with the brush to avoid ripping the paper.

Add paper/items overlapping edges. Add one piece at a time. Like this wifi password note from a lovely villa where we stayed in Tuscany.

I added a French letter from a trip to Paris, a business card from my antiques store, several tickets from the Italian railway and subway lines, old sheet music, one of my son’s handprints from when he was a toddler, and my badge from the Atlanta’s Buyers Market.

How about birthday cards from special friends, a race car drawn by my grandson, a winning bingo card, and the seal from my Alma Mater.

Last year, when I broke my ankle, my neighbor’s grandson made me a sweet card. I had to add that to my collection. It always makes me smile big…just like Grayson make’s me smile big.

Keep adding until your surface is filled. I added small flowers from cards and sheet music to fill any gaps.

I even added a tiny postcard from my hometown.

So many happy memories gathered in one place!

Simply turn her in different directions to see more memories!

A quarter turn gets you a whole new set of memories.

Isn’t that what life is all about? Collecting and reliving those memories!

It is hard for me to believe that I am posting my second yearly compilation of my favorite Thrift Store Decor Team projects! I’m so grateful to be part of this creative team. These ladies are truly talented and amazing! I’ve learned so many new skills over the past year and if you have been following along, I know you have as well! I’m gonna start with my own favorite projects. I’m a sucker for a good vintage make over. And these little beauties make me smile. Every one came from the local thrift store.

Sarah sees potential in used items. Her an incomparable vision coupled with her flair for Mid Century combine to transform the discarded into useful and fabulous creations. I’m convinced that if more people repurposed perfectly good items like Sarah, climate change would be tucked away into the annuls of history. Keep teaching Sarah. We are listening!

Our Southern Home

You know I love all DIY but my journey started with furniture. And Christy along with her daughter Ashlyn really brought out the beauty in this traditional style dresser. I love a solid piece of furniture and when you can update it with a new finish, well…that’s the best thing ever. Christy details the steps and gives you the tutorial on how to bleach furniture yourself.

Organized Clutter

Carlene has a rustic primitive loving heart just like me. She is a wiz with paint and stencils. And she uses them to decorate and revive everything! From furniture to boxes and signs, Carlene give you countless ways to upcycle the blahs into beautiful decor. These upcycled boxes are a great answer to clutter and storage problems. Get busy!

With one foot in the Thrift Store and one foot in the mid century, Sarah’s passion is revitalizing previously used items. Her skill set is unparalleled and her appreciation for color shines. I wish the entire world had vision and appreciation for repurposing like Sarah. I’m convinced that Climate Change would be banished to the annals of history. Keep teaching Sarah! We are listening.

House of Hawthornes

There is just something about a whimsical display that gets me every time. And Pam has nailed it with this fun little snowman. He’s easy to assemble and so stinking cute! What a great addition to your entryway once the Christmas decor has been retired until next year. While her projects are always laid out in detail, you’ve gotta love Pam’s banter as she narrates her projects.

My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia

A roundup would not be complete without a fabric project and this one is on my to do list! I’m so glad that Kristen showed us how to make these darling fabric flags. These are such an easy way to dress up a corner for any occasion! I can see these poking out of plants in my kitchen and even on my deck.

My Domesticated Life

All right friends. Look closely at this mirror. The frame is made from…wait for it…wooden snakes from the Dollar Store. That’s the beauty of this group…finding the fabulous beauty is something totally unexpected and underrated. And Maryann really took her vision and created a winner. Imagine the impact we can have on landfills by repurposing all of those builder grade mirrors, cabinets and fixtures. Great suggestion Maryann!

I am probably the biggest paint nerd that ever walked. So when Kathy posted this picture, my paint senses went crazy! Couple the paint addiction with an attraction to bling and toss in some Hollywood Glam. This finish is AMAZING!

My Repurposed Life

Forgive me if I go heavy on the furniture projects but you know that’s where my roots lie. And there is something timeless about clocks and compasses. So when Gail upcycled this gorgeous table with a compass motif my heart was happy. Gail is wiz with the power tools when it comes to altering and repurposing great quality wooden pieces. Her design is always simple but absolutely awesome!

My next door neighbor, Cindy, has a pine tree that drops the cutest little pinecones. Over the years they’ve gotten bigger. And every year, I grab some and plop them into a dough bowl inside of the front door or load them into a lantern on the front stoop.

With cooler weather right around the corner, pinecones make great decor for both fall and for winter. And the best part of decorating with pinecones? You can find them for free! I’m here to teach you how to get rid of the sicky sap, pine needles and debris that are gathered when you forage for pinecones. Let’s prep some fresh pinecones for use in DIY decor and crafts projects!

At the end of this post are the links to all of the bloggers who are participating. It’s a small but mighty group and I know you will be thrilled! Now, lets get busy prepping our pinecones for use in our crafts and DIY projects.

The Problem with Pinecones

If you have gathered pinecones, I mean more than one or two, you know that those little buggers can be pretty sticky. There is inevitably pine sap on most of those pinecones and that means there will be pine sap all over your fingers. Besides the sticky factor, pinecones can also harbor itty bitty bugs and such that you probably would rather not have inside of your home. Have you wondered how to get that pine sap off of the pinecones and how to ensure those bugs are gone? Follow these tips and you will surely be happy with your pinecones and crafts as your fingers will be sap free.

I tested two methods to see which was more effective. And I’m sharing the results with you.

Method No. 1: Baking

The first method is baking. Did you know that baking your pinecones at a low temperature eliminates both the sticky pine sap and the bugs! I was a little skeptical. So I tried it.

I harvested the pinecones from my and Cindy’s yards. Pinecones are sticky and they are messy. Be sure to pick out all of the pine needles, leaves, and debris that can be tucked into or sticking to your pinecones. Be prepared as this is a daunting task while your fingers are covered in sap.

My yard has pinecones too. But they are larger and have super pointy spikes on them. After grabbing just 4 or 5 from my yard, I abandoned the task. It was like grabbing sharp needles. I considered grabbing some gloves but the sharp edges would still remain after cleaning.

I really don’t want to have to deal with painful pinecones in my decor so I decided to only use the pinecones I had already gathered that had rounded edges.

Gather your pinecones and do your best at cleaning the debris, leaves, and pine needles from the pinecones.

Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Line a baking tray or two with aluminum foil.

Place the pinecones on the foil covered tray in a single layer and bake for 20 minutes.

I wasn’t messing around. I loaded up those cookie sheets.

Simply set the trays in the oven and bake for 20 minutes.

I made sure the oven was preheated.

After baking, I set the trays on the stove top to cool. I couldn’t resist handling a pinecone or two. I was a bit disappointed because I could still feel some sticky sap. But, with all things in life, sometimes, you must simply trust the process. So I stepped away and let them cool completely. Once the pinecones were cooled off, I handled a few and amazingly, they were sap free! Not a sticky pinecone in the bunch. Success! I supposed the sap completely dissolves in the cooling process.

Method No. 2: Vinegar and Water Bath

The second method is to soak the pinecones in a solution of vinegar and water. I used one gallon of warm water and added one cup of vinegar.

Mix the solution and dump in the pinecones.

I stirred the pinecones around to make certain they were covered with vinegar and water.

I made sure the pinecones were submerged by placing a watering can on top of them since they wanted to float to the top of the bucket. I let them soak overnight and then drained the bucket. In that process alone, my hands became sticky. I laid them in the sun to fully dry.

After two hours, I checked them. I flipped them over for the underside to dry. There was less sap but my hands still became sticky. I left them to dry for another 2 hours. Again, once completely dry, the pinecones were sapless!

While both methods did seem to eliminate the bugs and sap, the oven method was less entailed and much quicker. I simply cleaned the pinecones, loaded them onto the foiled tray, baked for 20 minutes, and allowed them to dry. This process did not entail stirring, weighing down pinecones or extensive drying in the sun.

While the vinegar and water method was also a success, the pinecones did take several hours to air dry in the sun. And remember, I had to flip them for the second side to dry. So if you have small children and time to spare in a sunny area, this may be the method for you.

As much as prepping the pinecones was indeed fun, I also tried 3 methods to remove pine sap from your fingers. This was indeed the most useful test of the day!

So, my crafty friends, now that your hands are clean and your pinecones are prepped…get busy! I want to see all of your pinecone projects!

Here is my first post about Using Epoxy Resin from 8 months ago. I had a minor fail (more about that later) but isn’t that what learning is all about? If we don’t try you can’t fail. So by the end of this post I should be working my way toward the intermediate level.

Choosing an Epoxy Resin Project

When acquiring new skills, you should always start with a small project. I wanted my project to have an adequate sized surface so I can practice the marbling technique. So let’s make some epoxy resin coasters.

Resin Molds

I ordered these silicone coaster molds off of Amazon.

There are many sizes shapes and varieties. I figured I might as well make something functional while I am practicing. The four simple coasters will be great practice. And the coaster holder seems a bit more complicated so I can develop and polish my skills. Here is the holder mold:

Total Boat Epoxy Resin

I am using Total Boat epoxy resin. What I love about Total Boat epoxy is that you can mix it in a one to one ratio and it is self leveling. Epoxy actually consists of two parts, an epoxy and a hardener. When you combine them, the epoxy activates and you have about 10-20 minutes before the hardening process begins. 1:1 ratio means that means you use one part epoxy to one hardener for your project. And self leveling means you don’t have to worry about evenly pouring the resin as it will even out itself. Super simple. If you are considering an epoxy resin project, I highly recommend that you visit Total Boat’s website for information, tutorials, and safety cautions. Always follow their recommended safety procedures including use of PPE and operating in a well ventilated area.

Supplies

• Maker Epoxy Resin, part A
• Maker Epoxy Hardener, part B
• mixing cups, size small, medium, and large
• stirring sticks
• pigment powder in desired colors
• pigment
• protective gloves
• Heat gun corded or cordless
• small fan to help with proper ventilation
• plastic to protect cover your work surface
• silicone resin coaster molds

Plan

• My plan is to mix enough resin for the complete project.
• I will need a larger mixing cup and 3 smaller ones for the color.
• Pour the coasters first since they are simple.
• Pour the holder last as it has a deeper mold and will require more resin.
• Add the color last and play with the design.
• Allow to dry overnight.
• Evaluate the process.
• Repeat the project if necessary.

Mixing Epoxy Resin

I estimated how much epoxy I would need and then mixed part A with part B. I needed about 8 ounces total of epoxy tinted white for the coaster and holder, plus 3 one half ounce portions of clear epoxy to tint with 3 different colors for accents. So I mixed enough epoxy in a larger mixing cup to have approximately 10 ounces of mixed resin for my project.

I stirred for about 3 to 5 minutes. Stir carefully and slowly to prevent excess bubbles from forming. This gave me my clear epoxy. I poured a small amount of clear epoxy into each of three tiny cups. My coasters will be basic white with a marble effect containing pigments of black, blue, and beige. So I added some black pigment powder to the first small cup and mixed for 2-3 minutes. I repeated the process with the second cup adding the blue pigment powder.

And finally I added some beige pigment powder to the third small cup.

I returned to my larger cup of clear epoxy resin and added a small amount of white pigment powder to create the white base for this project.

Be liberal with the pigment color as a little goes a long way. I stirred for about three minutes and ensured the color was dispersed throughout the resin.

Then I poured the white resin into each of the 4 individual coaster silicon molds. I was careful not to overfill the molds since I couldn’t remember if the resin would expand while drying. I filled them just below the top rim to leave a little room for my colored resin design.

Removing Air Bubbles

During the mixing process, air bubbles will form in the resin by the stirring process. I’m pretty sure that the chemical reaction helps this too. It is important with resin to try to remove any bubbles. The first step to removing the bubble and air pockets is to tap the outside of the mold lightly. I used my fingertips and gently tapped around the entire outside walls of each of the 4 coaster molds. You can see some bubbles in the next photo. As you tap the mold, the bubbles rise to the surface and pop.

Then I used the heat gun and held it about one inch from the top of each coaster keeping it moving in a circular motion. You will immediately see more bubbles pop.

I used the heat gun for about 20 seconds on each coaster until all bubbles were gone. Skip to the heading Next Step below to see the continued process or read the next paragraph to see where I made my first mistake with this project.

Fail Forward

Did I mention that this is a learning process? Well, here is where I made my first mistake…I should have made this a two-part process. The first part would be to do an initial pour into each of the 4 coaster molds leaving room for an additional thin coat after the first coat dries. This second thin coat would be poured and the colors added to that. If adding a design, you should pour a first coat and allow that to dry. Once dry, you add a flood coat ( or a very thin coat) and then add your colored epoxy to that. When you don’t allow the bottom epoxy to dry, you pretty much lose the colored application once you start using the heat gun (more about that later in the process). The force of the heat gun pushes the color into the epoxy essentially forcing it lower in the coaster where you can’t really see the color. Your goal for small projects like this is to add color to about a 1/8 inch wet base, no thicker.

Next Step

Allow this first epoxy application to dry overnight. Once dry, mix another batch of epoxy and separate into 4 small mixing bowls to make white, black, blue and beige. First pour a thin coat (about 1/8 of an inch thick, of white to top each coaster. Then add your colors in whatever design you desire. Use your heat gun to move the color around until you have achieved the desired design. Allow to dry overnight. This is the first set of coasters where I didn’t allow the resin to dry before adding a flood coat and then the colors.

Here are the second set of coasters where I poured the second thinner flood coat over the first coat.

You can see how the pigments are better dispersed in the second application because of the thin flood coat.

Final Step

Simply remove your coasters from the silicone molds.

Creating the Coaster Holder

In an effort to prevent mixing several batches of epoxy, I mixed a larger batch initially to use for the coasters and the holder. The only difference in the process between the coasters and the holder, besides the larger volume of epoxy needed, is that I used some of the colored epoxy prior to the first pour on the holder. I completed just one pour for the holder. I poured the resin into the sides of the mold a stopped there. With a stir stick, I added some colored epoxy into the sides of the mold to add color so that the holder would not be completely white. I also added some pigmented color to the top of the holder before pouring the resin there.

I did make a second set of coasters that I created using a slightly different way to color the holder. Here is the first holder:

For the second set, I used two pours and then added the pigment color to the holder mold before the first pour. I finished the initial pour leaving some room at the top to practice my design with another thin flood coat after the the set dried overnight.

Second Pour on the Coasters

Here is the first set of coasters made with a single pour.

Here is the second set where I allowed the first pour to dry completely and then did a second thin pour followed by adding the small amounts of colored epoxy.

I like them both.

I am practicing for a project that will mimic marble counters so I am using mostly white with just a touch of color. When that project is finished I will play with the bright and vibrant colors. Here are some of the pigments I have on hand:

And how cool are these glow in the dark pigment colors??? I’m going to have some fun with these in the garden.

I am using a large embroidery hoop as the base for the wreath.  They come in many sizes.  An embroidery hoop is basically one unit consisting of two round wooden hoops. The smaller hoops nestles inside of the larger hoop.  A piece of fabric is stretched between the two and clamped into place.  It is an ideal tool for creating embroidery.  I am using a 16″ hoop for my wreath.  It really is the perfect size for a DIY spring door wreath!

If you don’t want to destroy the handkerchiefs, you can simply insert them into the hoop rather than cut them or alter them in any way.  At the end of the project, tape the excess fabric to the back of the hoop.

Prep Work

Start by ironing and starching each handkerchief.  This will give them a stiffer texture allow them to stand up nicely along the edge of the hoop.  Without the starch, they will be limp and will not stand up allowing you to see the patterns and colors.  Who wants a limp and wilted DIY spring door wreath??

Assembly

After ironing, fold or scrunch each handkerchief and lay it on the hoop laying the pointed ends facing outward along the edge of the hoop, essentially forming the circle of the wreath.  Move the hankies around until you are pleased with the color pattern. 

Once you have your pattern, carefully place the inner hoop inside of the outer hoop to secure the hankies into place.

Adding a center to the wreath will cover the excess fabric from the hankies.  Trace the inside of the wreath onto some cardboard and cut out the circle. 

Next, cut a piece of fabric to cover the cardboard circle.  Attach the fabric by stretching it across the cardboard and over the edges.  Use hot glue to secure the edges of the fabric to the back of the cardboard circle.  I used my Ryobi cordless glue gun.

The fabric covered circle should fit snugly on top of  inside of the hoop.  Hot glue it into place by applying hot glue to the back edges and set it into place on top of the hoop.

Embellish

You can leave your wreath as is or add a sweet message to the center.  I found this little wooden blank sign at Hobby Lobby. 

I filled the holes with wood putty and sanded the surface smooth.  Two coats of Rustoleum2X white spray paint with primer and the sign was ready for a message.

I used my Colorshot Paint markers to write a little message. 

After the sign was completely dry, I hot glued it into place with my Ryobi cordless glue gun…one of my favorite Ryobi tools.

Since I didn’t cut the hankies, I used some packing tape to secure the excess fabric to the back of the circle to keep the extra fabric flat.

I thought the banner needed something more so I added some flowers.  I’m torn between using the sign and leaving the center empty.  What do you think?

Free Product for Wood Slice Ornaments

I started with a branch from one of the trees in our yard.  The branch was about 2.5 inches in diameter.  You can use a branch that is larger or smaller.  It’s totally your personal preference.  2-2.5 inch circles provide adequate space to write names.  If you have longer names to write, I would select a thicker branch from which to cut your wood slices.

I used my electric miter saw to cut my branch into approximately one inch centimeter slices, or just under 1/2 inch thickness. You can cut as many or as few wood slices as you desire.  I cut six to start just to see if I liked the final product, which I do!  So I will be cutting some more soon.

Select a Style

Once you have your slices, you can decide on a color scheme or theme for your slices.  I considered simply writing the names on the plain wood slices without painting or otherwise embellishing them at all.  You could simply write your name with a paint marker and be finished.  But I decided to paint a white circle on each slice to start.

After the circles dried, I simply grabbed a black chisel tipped marker and wrote a name across each slice.  You could use any color marker to write your names.  Or you could use colors to match your wrapping paper if you are using your wood slices as gift tags.  Drill a hole in the top of the DIY wood slice ornament.

Final Touches

Add your ribbon to hang your ornament or attach your tag.  Use whatever color you’re feeling.  Hang those babies on your tree, wreath, or stocking.  Or adorn your gifts with your new gift tags.

Welcome to Week 6 of The One Room Challenge. If you are just joining me for this Fall Edition of the ORC, here are the previous weeks’ posts:                             WEEK 1         WEEK 2          WEEK 3          WEEK 4           WEEK 5      

I am refreshing my Master Bedroom with new decor and new colors.  Thus, I need some new accent pieces and accessories.

I found this side table in my garage that was left over from closing my store, The Blue Building Antiques and Consignment.

I needed a small yet functional side table.  This antique style will mesh well with the new highboy and the antique mantle.  But this green marble top just will not compliment my new room.  So let’s change it’s look with some resin!

My room will be toned with woods and whites and highlighted with an added splash of vibrant blue.  I’m a marble lover so my plan for this table is a faux marble look with some blue accents.  

Resin Prep

When using any resin you must ensure proper ventilation of your work area.  I only use resin outdoors. This project coincided with a planned trip to the Tennessee mountains so I packed up my supplies and brought my project along.  Fortunately, our little hideaway for the next few days has a beautiful deck which was the perfect work space for this project.

I covered the work area with towels and newspaper to protect the work surface.  Gloves are a must with resin projects as resin contains harsh chemicals and a mask is recommended as you can’t be too safe!

An Oops Right Out of the Gate

Let me start by saying that the workshop was back in July.  I was so excited to start this project that I forgot one step…prepping the surface.  For this project, I should have painted the marble top white.  Although the resin will be pigmented with white, a starting surface of white means less of a chance that the green will show through.  Not to worry though.  For this project, I simply will add a second coat of resin after the first has dried.  But, had I remembered to properly prep the surface the first time, I could have eliminated a second coat of resin.  So, the final result was fine!  And isn’t that what DIY is all about?  Learning, improving, and honing your skills.  This is exactly why I am practicing before I tackle that big bathroom project.

Mixing the Resin

This resin is created by combining a 1:1 ratio of resin A and resin B(hardener). 

You have about 20 minutes of recommended working time before the resin starts to set.  In this case, I was working outside where the temperature was on the cooler side so the resin took longer to set.  Recommended temperature is aboe 70 degrees.  It was definitelyly too cold for this first pour.  The next day was much warmer and the resin was easier to pour and manipulate.  See how cloudy the resin mixture is in the photo above?  That is a telltale sign that the environmental temperature is too cold.  Fortunately, I was able to pour the resin so it did not go to waste.  And in my mind, I could hear Jess Crowe saying “if you make a mistake, you can just let it dry and pour over it again.” Even veteran DIY’er make mistakes.

Supplies

Total Boat had sent me a complete kit with both resins, measuring cups, wooden stirrers and pigments.  They included everything needed for this project.  I only needed to add gloves and a heat gun.  Of course I bought a Ryobi…they are my favorite go to for tools.

Time to Pour

I lightly sanded the marble surface.  I mixed the resins in equal parts into a plastic cup and stirred for 3 minutes.  I set the table top up on one of the plastic mixing cups so that the excess would run off of the sides and not pool around the edges.  Then I poured the resin onto the table top.  I used the wooden stirrer to move the resin across the table top.  Total Boat Epoxy Resin is self leveling.  So once I got it spread across the table top, I did not stress about it being of uniform depth as this product will take care of that automatically.

The next step would be to add the pigment to form the marble look and add some color.  Since I did not do the base coat of white, I will save the pigment for the second pour which will be revealed next week.  I will walk you through that process then.  This is just an intro to resin.

I used my Ryobi heat gun across the entire surface starting at the center and working outward.  This has two purposes:  1-It releases and bubbles from beneath the surface and, 2-It pushes the resin toward the edges so that it runs over the edges leaving a smooth edge to the top.  Once I had covered the entire surface and the excess resin was running over the sides, I simply walked away for an hour allowing the resin to begin to dry.  After 1 hour, I took the wooden stirrer and ran it along the bottom edge of the table top to remove the drip spots.  I repeated this process again an hour later.

Here is the table top.  She is ready for the final coat of resin which will include the marbling and added color steps. 

I have a busy few days when I return home as we are in the final stretch for this challenge.  But, for now, I will enjoy these Tennessee mountains.

We recently replaced our deck (read about it here).  So we had some scrap wood lying around.  The demolition of a 16 foot x 10 foot deck produces of quite a bit of old wood! 

Scrap wood is a crafters dream.  But that was a lot of wood.  We ended up burning most of it. 

But you know I did save a few pieces for some projects.  I mean, it was like shopping in the thrift store with $50 in your pocket and a free weekend…the possibilities.  I sorted some wood with projects in mind and limited myself to a few pieces from each of these piles.

With fall approaching, these old 4 x 4’s will be perfect to make some pumpkins out of this scrap wood.

I grabbed a couple of old 4 X 4″s and headed to the miter saw.  I cut the 4 X 4’s into random sized sections varying from 3 inches to 8 inches. 

These display best in groups of 3 or 5.  I had so much wood that I made a few sets to give away as gifts.

The Simple Process

Here are the steps:

1. Cut the 4 X 4 into varying sections.  
2. Sand the rough edges.
3. Paint the wood.
4. Use a Hot glue gun to attach twig sections for stems.
5. Add moss, leaves, or raffia to adorn the tops of the pumpkins.
6. Display your pumpkins.

Use Your Vision – As Simple or Detailed as You Like

I decided to get a little fancy with my pumpkins.  I used my miter saw to trim off some of the squared edges so that the pumpkins were a little less square.  I would only recommend this if you are comfortable and familiar with a miter saw.  Be certain to use proper safety precautions, safety gear, and recommended operating techniques.  If you don’t have a miter saw, use a sander!  It will take a little longer but you can get the same effect.  The square pumpkins are absolutely adorable too!  And so much faster and easier to make.

Sanding Makes Handling Safer

Always sand the rough edges for a smooth appearance and to reduce the chance of getting splinters when handling your pumpkins.

Paint Choices

Select a paint of your choice and use whatever technique you prefer to paint your masterpieces.  I made two sets by simply painting the pumpkins a solid color.  On my third set I used 3 different variations of purple paint to give the pumpkins some dimension.  For the fourth set, I used many colors for a rainbow effect.

Use any colors that you like!  Be creative!  

Adding Stems

You can use a variety of items as stems for your pumpkin creations.  I tend to use whatever is on hand in my yard or my garage.  Last week, my neighbor trimmed his crepe myrtles so I grabbed the loppers and snipped a few branches.  I also trimmed a lavender bush recently.  I saved a branch to use for stems.  Yesterday I was walking up our front sidewalk and noticed the lovely the bleeding hearts in my garden.  These would be darling around the stems!  Or lantana or leaves or succulents.

Be creative.  Use what you have.  Play around with possibilities until you find the combination that you love. 

The Final Pumpkins!

Purple seems to be my color of this fall season so my first set of pumpkins were painted purple.

Color is fresh on my mind from the Color Your World contest so why not have some rainbow pumpkins??  Rainbows elicit happy and joyous feelings.  I can see myself moving these gems from room to room to brighten spirits as needed.

The final pumpkins are a combination of traditional orange and farmhouse white because neither of those decor themes are going anywhere.

So many possibilities!

Quikrete has been a sponsor of my favorite DIY Conference, the Haven Conference, for as long as I can remember.  This year I finally decided to grab a bag of concrete and enter One Bag Wonder Contest.  Basically, you create something with just one bag of Quikcrete concrete mix.  There are several categories including Novice, Intermediate, or Expert.  I am definitely a novice.  This is my first concrete project ever.

The Plan

We recently replaced our deck.  As we slowly create our perfect outdoor space, we have much potential for garden decor both on the deck and in the new under deck patio area which is surrounded by a garden (in process).  I’ve seen many pictures and videos of avid gardeners using concrete to mold leaf bird baths and other creations.  My main inspiration came when I saw this photo of a childhood friend’s leaf project.   Thanks to Karen Stankovics in Philly!

So I decided to give it a try.

Though I would love to create a huge leaf from one of my giant elephant ears, I thought smaller leaves would be more suitable as this is my first concrete project.  I can always tackle bigger projects should this one go smoothly.

So the plan was to make 4-6 casts of small to mid sized elephant ears.  While I would love to create a water fountain, with my novice skills I decided to use the smaller vessels as watering stations throughout the garden.  We have many birds and several hummingbirds who live in our yard.  These small leaf vessels could be scattered around the garden as a water source.

First I covered a work surface with plastic.  I used a space in the garage so that the leaves could dry without the threat of rain. 

Per the videos I watched, I used sand to build a mound on which to place the leaf.  The mound serves to hold the bowl shape of the leave when the concrete is poured on top.  The mound of sand basically ensures that the leaf does not dry flat or get crushed by the heavy concrete.

My husband has used concrete before, so he helped me mix the concrete.  We used about 1/4 of the bag of concrete mix and simply dumped it into a bucket.  We added water and mixed slowly adding more water in small increments.  You want a consistency that is firm but not watery.  

I built a mound for each leaf, placed the leaf “up” side down on the sand.  Make sure there is sand under every side edge of your leaf.  Repeat for each leaf. 

Slowly add your concrete onto the leaf.  We started by pouring concrete onto the leaf and ended by using a small shovel or trough to smooth the concrete over the leaf.  

This being my first time using concrete, I was worried that the edges would be too thin and would crack or break off.  So I made sure there was about a 3/4 to 1′ inch layer around the edges.  

This is the second batch of concrete we mixed and it was a little on the thin side.  It still worked but the first batch was not as loose.

I also saw videos where people added hardware into the concrete on the back of the leaf to secure a hanger or stand for the leaf.  Again, I decided to stay simple with this project until I build my skill level and confidence.

After smoothing the concrete over the leaves, I allowed the forms to dry for 24 hours. 

Then, I carefully flipped each leaf over and began peeling the leaf off of the actual concrete.  

I was amazed at the veining detail! 

I used a stiff wire brush to remove the leaf remnants and excess sand. 

I will have to research pouring techniques a little bit more in order to ensure very smooth edges.  All of my leaves have a bit of a concrete rim around the edges.  This is acceptable as they will hold some water.

The final step is to seal the concrete.  You can paint or add stain if you like.  For now I am leaving them as is.  Once we get some color under the deck I will probably paint these. 

I’m pleasantly surprised at how well these turned out.  I will be planning other similar projects for the spring.  Who knows, maybe that fountain will become a reality!

I made enough of these that they can be scattered around the garden in the spring.  

As with any new skill, I will need to practice a bit more to get the edges just right.  I don’t mind the thicker rim but I would like it to be consistent around the entire piece.  I get to do this again!  And I need a grinder to finish those edges.  Let me know any tips you might have!
