Use What You Have for an Easy Easter Tablescape

I’ve always been intimidated by tablescapes.  Maybe because we have so many people at the table for holidays that there isn’t really any room for the pretty things.  We need all of the space to accommodate the food to feed everyone!  But, your decor is simply a reflection of YOU.  That includes your table decor.  and you have to start somewhere, right?  So here is my first tablescape.

Who can afford to go buy  hundreds of dollars of matching plates and pretty glasses every time a holiday comes around?  Not me, that’s for sure!  So why not use what you have on hand to make a stunning tablescape?  Today, I’m using what I have on hand to make a festive easter tablescape.  I start with the basics that I have on hand and maybe then I can grab a few new items from a local discount store.  If you add to your tablescape staples a little at a time, before you know it you will have everything that you need for a fabulous tablescape and you can simply add holiday appropriate fillers to your table.

To Tablecloth or Not (Bare Tabletop)

I think this is a personal preference.

  • Do you love fabric?  I have tons of vintage tablecloths.  Will you risk staining them with cranberry sauce?
  • Do you like romantic and soft tables?
  • Are you a minimalist?  Less is better and I don’t care to do extra laundry.
  • Are you a wood connoisseur?  Let that tabletop shine.
  • What is your theme?  Is it Easter, Summer, you love blue?

Placemats or Chargers?

I love a good charger!  And I often find placemats on sale.  You can even make your own place mats out of shelf liner.  If you find a great pattern, cut out a large circle…instant placemat!  Buy chargers at after holiday sales on at Hobby Lobby and Michael’s.  Dollar General also has chargers as the seasons change.  I bought these chargers for $1 each at the Dollar Tree when we updated our Tuscan Inspired Kitchen.  Buy a few chargers at the Dollar Tree every so often until you have enough.  We usually need 14 so I buy them in lots of 2-4.  You can also decoupage these with Mod Podge and paper napkins.  Another option is spray paint but be sure to let them air out so that you don’t smell paint while enjoying your Easter ham.

Layer Your Plates

My Mom most hosted almost EVERY holiday growing up.  My Nana, Mom Mom and Great Aunt all lived in apartments so Mom hosted alot.  As the elders aged, Mom hosted every holiday.  But we didn’t use salad and desert plates.  Just a china dinner plate with a pretty rose in the center.  Simple times.

I do love the layered look. So I will need to build my inventory.  I often see pretty plates with seasonal designs on sale after the holiday as well.  Home Goods had these beauties.  At $6.99 and $7.99 they were a bit out of budget, for now.  But it is important to have goals!

Wouldn’t these white with blue Mikasa dessert plates be beautiful with my Liberty Blue?

I could have used my everyday plain while bread plates but I wanted some color so I found these bread plates at Target for $.50 and these bowls for $.75.

They are plastic so perfect for Gbaby Blu when the Spiderman and Pirate plates are in the dishwasher.  Fortunately his favorite color is “rainbow” so he won’t mind the pink and purple!

Dinner Napkins

Dinner napkins are easy for me since I have a passion for vintage linens.  When I had my store, The Blue Building Antiques, we handled estates.  I would always buy up the linens so I have a nice little supply.  I decided to use these with a green trim for a fun focal point.

Here is a short video on how I folded these napkins.

When I strolled through Target and Home Goods, I couldn’t resist these napkins either.  Such pretty designs.  So now I am starting a small supply of paper dinner napkins!  Wouldn’t the floral be great on some Dollar Tree chargers??  I see a future project in the making!

Silverware

No surprise here.  These are our everyday utensils.  It’s a mixup of about 6 different patterns.  When you have 5 kids, you pick up extras because we all know how silverware goes missing!!!  I was even lucky to find 4 matching sets in the silverware drawer for these pictures.  It’s a miracle!  I did see some cute gold plastic silverware at Target.  I might have to go back for those.

The Tablescape Centerpiece

I’m using my tiny kitchen table for this Easter tablescape.  So there is not a ton of extra space in the center.  I bought this lily earlier this month for 5 Simple Ways to Add Spring to Your Decor

I’ve just about blown my meager floral budget for spring.  So,  I grabbed these from my yard.

I noticed these last year when they were about 1/4 of their current size.  It was well into the summer season and I really wanted to make sure they were something special and not just onion grass.  So as they emerged back in February, I instructed Mr. Blu NOT to mow them down until they bloomed.  He’s such a great sport.  You know how men are with their lawns!  So I moved them out of his way to be relocated elsewhere in the garden via a temporary side trip to the kitchen Easter tablescape.  I found a vintage water pitcher in the garage and popped them inside.  The hardest part was pulling the residual grass off of the bulb roots.

10 Things I Did this Week to Get Yard Ready for Spring!

The centerpiece display still needed something else, something shorter for visual balance.  You know I love my succulents and I remembered that I had the perfect vessel.

My memory is failing me right now.  I can’t remember if this belongs to my maternal or paternal grandfather.  I’m pretty sure it was Mom’s dad, my P-Pop.  I do know it sat in the cupboard throughout my entire childhood.  Now it’s displayed in my home.

This was the perfect addition to my tablescape!

Haha, Tinkerbell refused to move!
