Find Your Inspiration

Welcome to Week 3 of The One Room Challenge

The easiest way to decide on a room color is to find an inspiration.  Several weeks ago, I went to a local fabric store with IV who is revamping a camper.  She needed fabric.  So I browsed and found this:

I love the colors in this design.  While I still want to keep the walls in the dining room light, I am ready for a hint of color.  This palette gives me both bold and muted colors to choose from.  Won’t this make a great curtain fabric??  I have found my inspiration.  Now to select a wall color!

When I am considering paint for a room, I use one of these as a starter reference, a Paint Color Fan Deck!

It is so helpful to have all of the colors available to browse through right in the actual room.  I can eliminate some possibilities immediately.  Like that one specific color that speaks to my heart and I absolutely love, in theory. Have you ever rushed right out to buy that fabulous color that you saw on Pinterest or Instagram?  Only to get it home and realize that it looks so hideous in the actual light of the actual room.  Yep!  A color fan deck will prevent that disaster!

Once I decide on what brand of paint I will use, I head to the retail location to purchase the paint.  I have been using mostly Behr of late.  I love the quality and coverage.  It is also sold at Home Depot and that is the closest home improvement store in my city.

Back to my fabric inspiration.  I love the kalidescope of colors:  purple, orange, blue, green…I could still keep the walls relatively white-ish.  But that green!  Maybe it was my Irish surfacing.  Or maybe the fact that Kelly Green was Pop’s favorite color.  So many Kelly Green stories.  The awning on my childhood home in Philly had a Kelly green and white striped awning.  The railing on the porch of the same home was Kelly green and white.  When Mom had shirts made for O’Brien’s Water Hole they were white with green print.  For so many years I really didn’t like Kelly green.  There are so many other fun and beautiful choices.  But right now, right here…this dining room is going to have some green.  I decided to start with just a hint of green.  We will see if there is space for some Kelly Green later in the project!

Here is the color selected for the dining room:

Here is a sneak preview of the color on the walls:

Although I was late to the farmhouse craze of light or white walls, I am still enjoying the airy open and bright aesthetic of a paler room.  And this Mayfair White actually brightens this room.  I can’t wait to add all of the other details to this room.

When I completed my Entryway Makeover last month, I stole the light fixture from the dining room and relocated it to the entryway.  I was just the perfect fixture for the entryway.  And since I knew I would be moving on to the Dining Room project next, I figured I would simply shop my garage for another fixture.  So I did.

I had this beauty leftover from when I closed my store, The Blue Building Antiques.  I dreamed of using it in my home some day but I never expected to unpack it so soon!  When I realized I was committing to use greens in this room, the light bulb exploded and the sirens rang!

I had to make a few adjustments.  It was missing a canopy and a loop.  These are the parts that hide your hole in the ceiling and hold weight of the chandelier.  I also had to replace the cross bar with one having a larger diameter threading.  Fortunately, I have parts for years in my garage so I grabbed what I needed.  Then I had to color match.  My chandy is an odd color silver so I used two colors of Rustoleum to create the finish I needed.  I will do a blog post on how to color match soon!

The canopy on the left was originally gold.  The canopy on the right is the one I was trying to color match.  I used the Rustoleum gold and then a light spray of silver and the result was perfect!

Mr. Blu helped me install my silver and green vintage chandelier and it looks wonderful with the newly painted walls.

Next on my to do list is the refurbishing of two antique round front china cabinets.  One belonged to my grandmother.  I am so excited to move this into the room and use it the way that she did!
