This is my hammered copper farmhouse sink…

I won this fabulous sink from Sinkology at The Haven Conference several years ago.  It is my favorite part of my kitchen!  It is gorgeous but it does require upkeep.  Do you realize how food particles can affect a copper finish.  I know I didn’t.  And I really discovered my favorite way to clean my copper sink by mistake.  Copper tarnishes and constantly needs to be polished or cleaned.  A sink is especially susceptible to stains and discoloration.  Here is a photo of mine at its worse:

I’ve used cleaners and sealers and polishes but my accidental discovery is easy and inexpensive.  It’s ketchup!

One evening after we had eaten burgers for dinner (my youngest son really dumps the ketchup on), some left over ketchup was left sitting in the sink.  A short time later I returned to the kitchen and saw the glob. 

So I washed it away.  Beneath the glob was shiny copper!  Eureka!  The acidic nature of the ketchup had removed the tarnish.

I’ve tested this method and here are my recommendation for using ketchup to clean a copper sink:

Clean your sink with dish soap and warm water. Make sure the sink is clean of all food particles and debris.

Pour or squirt enough ketchup into the sink to spread a liberal layer of ketchup over the bottom of the sink.

I don’t use this method on the sides of the sink often as they are less prone to have extreme discoloration.

Use your hand or a flat sponge to spread the ketchup and ensure every inch of the surface is covered with ketchup.

Allow the ketchup to sit for 10-15 minutes. You will immediately see the ketchup beginning to work its magic.

You can test a spot after 15 minutes. If the sink is shiny and clear of spots, you can remove the ketchup. If not, let it sit another 5 minutes.

Remove the ketchup by spraying warm water from your faucet sprayer or wipe with warm water to remove all of the ketchup.

Follow up by washing with warm soapy water.

Finally, towel dry the sink and buff to a shine

Apply a sealer to help make the sink more resistant to stains and to keep the sink shiny.

This method has become my #1 method to cleaning my copper sink.

My SECOND Favorite Way to Clean My Copper Sink

This method uses a product that has become quite popular recently, Bar Keepers Friend.

It comes in a powdered or liquid form. I prefer the liquid because, well, it seems less abrasive. This method, unlike the ketchup method, does require some gentle scrubbing. My Scrub Mommy was actually black when I finished. But, I was happy with the results.

I used the same application method as with the ketchup. Just squirt it on and spread it over the sink.

I squirted Bar Keeper’s Friend onto the sink and worked it in with gentle circular motion and light pressure on the Scrub Mommy. This method didn’t work as quickly as the ketchup so I let it sit for 15 minutes. I did have to reapply to a few spots but I was pleased with the result.

After a rinse, the sink really looked alot better.

Key Tips to Maintain a Tarnish Free Copper Sink

The key to a shiny and stain free copper sink is to ensure all food is cleared from the surface after every use. Towel dry the sink to remove water droplets that contain minerals and tiny pieces of food particles. Apply sealer frequently.

A copper sink certainly requires more upkeep than a porcelain, ceramic and most definitely a stainless steel sink. But, to me, it’s worth it!

Here are some alternative methods that I have used. They didn’t work as quickly as the other two methods I just shared.

• vinegar and baking powder
• lemon juice

I guess it comes down to which method I prefer at the time I’m about to tackle the project. The ketchup method does not require any scrubbing or extra effort like the Bar Keeper’s friend method. So, ketchup will remain my go to. Just squirt, spread, and walk away. Return to rinse and enjoy your shiny copper sink!

I will continue to try alternative methods just because…why not??? If you have another method to cleaning a copper sink, please share with me and I will try it!

I gathered some oranges, ginger, cinnamon sticks and whole allspice for my simmer pot.

I sliced one half of an orange and placed it in a small pot on the stove top.

I added 1 tablespoon of whole allspice, 1/2 cup of sliced ginger, and two cinnamon sticks.

Add 3 cups of water.

Bring to a full boil.

Reduce the burner to low for a slow simmer. Enjoy the fragrance.

Tips for a Great Simmer Pot:

• You can adjust the amounts of each ingredient depending on your preferences. I will add more oranges next time for a stronger citrus scent.
• Keep a close eye on your simmering pot and add additional cups of water as needed. I set a timer for 30 minutes and check the water level.
• Store your ingredients in a glass jar overnight and reheat the next day. You can reuse your simmer pot for 3 days.

Additional Simmer Pot Ingredients:

• cranberries
• apples
• pears
• nutmeg
• rosemary
• lemon
• lime
• pumpkin spice

These are just a few suggestions. You can add any items that appeals to you.

You can also enhance the aroma by adding your favorite essential oil. There are so many possibilities. Start with your favorite combinations and vary the scents to find your favorite!

Day One: Kitchen Cabinets

I started the declutter challenge on Day One with the main upper cabinets near my sink.  These cabinets hold my dishes, glassware, mugs, a few appliances that get frequent use like the toaster and crockpot, and our bread.  These are the cabinets that get the most use so they were a great place to start.

Last year, I had removed some items we didn’t use regularly like tea cups and Rubbermaid plastic bottles.  I moved these to a shelf in the guest bedroom.  My plan is to consolidate existing with additional items to a tub and relocate the tub to the garage since I haven’t really used the tea cups or Rubbermaid.  There are many items in the kitchen that do not get regular use but I am not yet ready to discard.  Perhaps after sitting in the garage for 6 months, I will be ready to rehome them.  We can only hope.  But getting them out of the kitchen is the first step.

Here are the dishware and bread cabinets.

Back when I had my store, The Blue Building Antiques and Consignment, I frequented several thrift stores regularly.  I was constantly buying kitchen gadgets, vintage serve ware, plates, and glassware.  As you know, I have a love for all things vintage and antique.  I was scooping up so many cool kitchen items but many just weren’t practical.  I would eventually move them to the store inventory for resale.  But I have held on to quite a bit.  So a lot of those excess pieces are moving to Etsy.  

I also had complimentary glasses from restaurants that we just don’t use.  So, those will be donated.  Basically, I sorted the glasses into sections:  Daily use, coffee mugs, travel tumblers, plastic glasses and tumblers for out doors (by the pool), cocktail glasses and wine glasses.  Eventually, the cocktail and wine glasses will go to a bar area in the dining room once we expand that bar area.  And some glasses were just beat and placed into the trash-like the plastic we use outdoors when gardening or landscaping.

Over the sink is a smaller cupboard that holds pitchers, a coffee grinder, and my small food processor.  I recently added our vitamins and supplements to this area so there were bottles seemingly everywhere.  Four Rubbermaid pitchers are way too many.  We no longer have 5 children seeking Koolaid in the summer.  And since Pop is now in heaven watching over us, I don’t need those gallon pitchers for homemade iced tea.  I am keeping one for summer but it will be in that tote in the garage.  

I used a few Dollar Tree plastic baskets to corral the vitamin bottles.  These will do for now until I find something more attractive and sturdy. 

Day Two:  Kitchen Pantry -Regularly Declutter

Day Two area of concentration was the pantry cupboards.  Mr. Blu does a great job of maintaining these areas.  We did have some outdated and expired items.  So those were trashed.  And I have identified a few areas that need small baskets or bins to better organize items like packets of taco seasoning, gravy mix, ranch mix, etc. I also rehomed some items to the “not currently using bin”.

And here is a smaller cupboard with coffee, spices, etc.  There is not a real wow factor in this pantry cupboard as I have been working hard to maintain this one.  So let’s call this my inspiration!!!  

Day Three:  Kitchen Drawers

The dreaded drawers!  In my kitchen, the drawers and junk drawers go hand in hand.  So I started with the utensil drawers.  Our main utensil drawers was one that I sorted last January (read about that HERE) and it has remained relatively tidy.  This drawer was actually the one area in the entire kitchen requiring the least attention!I continued with the next utensil drawer which merged into the junk category.  The easiest way to tackle this mess was to empty all 3 drawers and begin to sort.  You would not believe the things that a DIY’er tosses into a kitchen drawer.  Electronics, hardware, assorted tools, a small tv (really small), curtain hardware, light bulbs, ten cell phones, cookbooks…we don’t have all day so I will just share the photo.

I sorted items into the following piles:

• old electronics and accessories – cell phones, camcorders cords and chargers, extension cords, power cords for Lord knows what.
• cookbooks.
• hardware – screws, nails, hooks, staples, bolts, zip ties, etc., basically anything that belongs in the garage.
• trash – lids without partners, parts to items long discarded, worn knives and gadgets
• things to donate – items I know we will never use.
• items we frequently use.

Then I placed these items into the 3 drawers.  

These drawers contained happy reminders of a home well loved and lives well lived.  It was fun to sort through old recipes as well.

Day Four: Under Sink

We had so many pots and pan!  I donated a few, moved a couple to the camping tote, and threw a few in the trash.  A future project will be to research drawer slides and lid organizers to make this space more efficient and the pots and pans more easily accessible.

Day Five: Junk Drawer-Ultimate Declutter Task

Like I stated above, I have many junk drawers.  But this one is the original.  It is where we drop the mail, receipts, phone chargers, coupons, etc.  It is now sorted and organized.   A declutter success story!  This will be a weekly task as this drawer is also the “quickly hide it drawers” if someone comes over unexpectedly.  

Day Six: Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies are mostly stored under the sink counter.  This is an area that is easier to maintain since I pull items from here on a daily basis.  I will be looking for some sliding baskets to help make these supplies easier to access.

Day Seven:  Fridge and Freezer

Since upgrading all of our kitchen appliances last year for My Tuscan Inspired Kitchen,  And HERE is the post about the new appliances.  I’ve been very conscious of keeping these areas clutter free and organized.  This was a good opportunity to removed the massive amounts of Holiday Beer from the fridge and relocate it back to the overflow refrigerator in the garage.  Don’t be alarmed as we don’t drink nearly as much Sam Adams as this before photo would lead you to believer.

I’m headed to the grocery store today so I left some space for new items.  Below is one the french drawer in the fridge.  Love this for meats, cheeses, etc.  I will be searching for more organizers that will help keep these items from moving around when the drawer is opened or closed.

My kitchen is completely decluttered and reorganized!  This has been both a liberating and an inspiring challenge.  I am ready for Week 2.  Will you join me?

While I am loving my new kitchen, it is time to pare down and make this gorgeous space work better for our shrinking family.  

Over the years, I have accumulated extra dishes, bowls, pots and pans of every size, silverware, glassware, cups, etc.  Add owning an antique and consignment store into the mix coupled with an addiction to vintage items and you have the perfect formula for clutter! 

I mean, how much of this kitchen display do you thing I packaged and brought home when I closed The Blue Building in 2019?  

With 5 children it is simply easier to have more than enough as opposed to being short.  We never had to run the dishwasher or wash dishes in order to serve a meal.  We are indeed very blessed.

#1 now has a family of his own.  #2 is married as well.  #3 lives nearby in his own home. #4 also lives nearby in her own place as well.  That leaves Mr. Blu, #5, and me!  So our kitchen that at one point served 9 (including my parents), now needs to function for 3.  

I would imagine at some point, extras will be needed when everyone is visiting.  But those items can be stored away and utilized only when visitors are here.  I no longer need 15 dinner plates, 15 soup/cereal bowls, 15 glasses or stock pots in which to cook 2 pounds of spaghetti.  It’s time to pare down and to live more simply.

While I would love to have some state of the art or brand new organizing accessories for my drawers and cabinets, that will come as I exhaust the list of priority projects in our home.  Those items can be so expensive and after all of our improvements in 2020, my budget is a big fat $ZERO!  So, for now, or at least until I clean out the garage and can access my wood working tools to build some new drawer dividers and the like, I will simply gut each drawer, clean the current organizers, donate or store excess items, and refill my cupboards and drawers with just essentials.  

First target…the silverware drawer.  Having run my own antique store for 10 years, I have been to thousands of yard and estate sales.  There is not a kitchen gadget that is safe from me!  I love them.  And if they are vintage…even better.  But, do I NEED them??  More often than not, that answer is no.  

Here is what was in my silverware drawer:

I found my Pampered Chef scraper that has been missing for 18 years!  Actually, I found both!  They were all the way in the back of the drawer under the organizer.  I could probably stop right now because I can’t imagine being more satisfied with this project than I am right now!  But…I will continue.

Being in the antique and consignment business means that you keep “like” things together.  So if you find a beautiful vintage slotted spoon along with its gorgeous matching serving spoon, you keep them together even though you only need a slotted spoon.  This is curse.  And eventually, you must recognize that you don’t need the serving spoon so you must set it free.  Reality is that there is someone out there who needs that serving spoon!  “It’s a crime to separate them,” the voices scream.  Well, I’m here to tell you that it’s a crime for me to have this much crap.  So some of it is going!  

How many sets of vintage measuring spoons does one kitchen need? Or carving knives? 

I dumped it all out on the kitchen table.  While the trusty Rubbermaid silverware drawer organizer was soaking in a bleach bath, I sorted all of the utensils into the following:

• KEEP IN DRAWER for daily use
• move to OCCASIONAL USE basket to be stored in pantry
• move to STORAGE for large parties/visits
• DONATE
• TRASH

                           
 

On the 12th Day of Christmas, my hoarding drawer revealed:

Much better!  One drawer down and 7 to go…then on to the cupboards and pantry!  This organization task will take me a while.  I must do it in stages because purging, for me, is overwhelming.  So, stay tuned for more progress…a little at a time!

Welcome to Week 7 of the One Room Challenge! This is the week where you start to panic. The big reveal is next week. What details did I forget? Will I get all of the little seemingly insignificant projects finished? This is my first ORC so I really am just learning the ropes. I planned out my weekly projects but if you’ve been following along, my cabinets were supposed to be the topic of Week 4. So, as with any project we must deal with unforeseen issues that cause delays. Fortunately, I’ve had enough small projects to keep me busy but these cabinets were a major project.

Our Original Cabinet Finish

I first painted my kitchen cabinets white about three years ago. Here is a picture of the original cabinets.

Mr. Blu wanted white cabinets. I thought he was crazy as we have a very large family. At the time, I still had my antique store so life was crazy and rushed. It seemed that white would be high maintenance in a time when I had no time for maintetance.

But, I went ahead and painted them white. And I loved it! Our kitchen was refreshed and renewed. But the paint I used was not ideal for a kitchen and over time there were chips and scratches and such, as you would expect.

This time around, I planned to use an oil based paint for my painted cabinets. I remember years ago as a little girl helping my Dad paint around our house. Pop was the original DIY master! Back in the day all he used was oil based enamel. When I was in 6th grade, I got to revamp my bedroom. It was the first time Pop really used latex paint. While it was easy to use, I could tell the difference from the oil based enamel that we had always used before. I it still is ingrained in my tough Irish mind that oil based paint is the most durable paint. And so, that’s what I decided to use on the kitchen.

Surely industrial and marine grade oil based paint will hold up to the demands of a busy Edinger kitchen!

Using Oil Based Paint

Oil based paint needs an oil based primer. I had forgotten about the primer. A quick trip to our local Sherwin Williams store proved quite fruitful as I got to chat with one of their specialists. You must use an oil based primer with oil based paints for fresh wood that has never been painted and when painting over latex paint. I didn’t necessarily need the primer since I had used a mineral based product originally on my painted kitchen cabinets. However, I wanted this treatment to last a long long time. As with all important paint jobs, primer is a crucial step to preserving a good paint job. So, I bought the oil based primer.

With our new luxury vinyl planked floor already installed, I didn’t want to spray the cabinet built ins. The doors would be sprayed to achieve a fine finish. But the base cabinets would need to be hand brushed.

Help from Homeright

Homeright was kind enough to send me a Super Finish Max paint sprayer. Their Finish Max is my go to tool for painting furniture and even ceiling and walls when appropriate. Some time ago, they released their new Super Finish Max which was redesigned to reduce the need to thin your paint. I have never used a paint sprayer for oil based paint so I was excited to give it a try with my painted cabinets project.

The sprayer arrived with three different spray tips to use with different types of paint, stains, and polys. I called their customer service line just to make sure I had selected the correct tip for my oil based paint. Judy was quite helpful and concurred with my choice. So off I went to the driveway with my large Homeright spray shelter, my Super Finish Max sprayer, and 22 cabinet doors of varying sizes.

The Process

I set up a paint station inside of the shelter to maximize the number of doors I could paint at once.

The process consisted of:

• a light sanding to both sides of each door
• one coat of primer to the back of each door
• allow each door to dry completely
• repeat the previous three steps for the front of each door

Each coat of primer had a dry time of 2 hours. I was able to prime the all of the doors, front and back, in one day.

The next day I set up the Homeright Spray Shelter again. This paint needed 8 hours to dry. This drying window allowed so much room for error. It would be my luck that a windstorm or flock of fluffy birds would blow through the neighborhood leaving remnants of many undesirable things in the air to settle on my drying doors. So I repeated the process listed above but carried every door individually inside to dry. Believe me when I tell you that there is a definite art to balancing a horizontally carried wet painted cabinet door (like a pizza box) while trying to open the door all the while dodging the dog who reacts like you’ve been gone for three days every time you re-enter the house. That was 22 trips up the steps and into the spare bedroom where the doors could dry safe from bugs, stray leaves, pet hair, etc.

My plan was to spray the final coat on the back of the doors early in the morning. The paint would dry for 8 hours although I could probably allow 6 drying hours. This would allow me to paint the fronts starting around 6 PM and allow all of the doors to dry completely overnight. Um…that didn’t happen because I was exhausted from my spectacularly balanced 22+ trips up the steps coupled with the 90 degree Alabama weather. So instead, I hung out in the pool…with a cocktail!

I finished the doors the next day and allowed them another overnight drying session. It was time for re-installation! That mean…new hardware!

D.Lawless Hardware Sets the Standard

I met Derrick from D.Lawless Hardware at my very first Haven Conference in about 8 years ago. D.Lawless has the most extensive and beautiful selection of furniture hardware for just about any project. I had received several sets of hardware for projects over the past few years. You can see how beautiful hardware and embellishments can completely change the look of furniture Here and Here.

I wanted the new knobs to compliment my copper hammered farmhouse sink. And D.Lawless did not disappoint. I found the following knobs and ordered one of each so I could see them in the kitchen with the floors and the counters and the sink. All of the samples were beautiful but there was really only one that demanded to be installed. I’m sure you can guess which one I selected.

I also wanted to replace the gold hinges. Low and behold, D.Lawless has white hinges! So I emailed Derrick and asked if he would send me some hardware for my kitchen. He said of course! And just days later, I received my hammered copper knobs and white hinges!

It took a little bit of balancing, maneuvering, and patience to reinstall the doors with the new hinges. The old hinge holes did not exactly fall in line with the holes in the new hinges. This wasn’t a big deal for the installation on the insides of the doors but I had to be more careful on the exposed portion of the hinges. I figured out a process and over the course of a two days I was able to install all of the doors.

What a stunning difference! From the paint to the hinges to the gorgeous knobs! My kitchen is coming to life!

Easing into the Final Reveal

This next week will be spent completing those little annoying tasks that always get pushed to the end of a project. And there are always new small but important projects added as the primary projects have been completed. Things like painting the baseboards and the trim around the exterior door leading to our deck. I have a few small pieces of backsplash that need to be replaced. My kitchen is beautiful and refreshed! But our kitchen table needs a face lift because she really looks quite shabby in the shadow of the renovations. Same for a long MCM dresser that we use as a buffet and storage piece. So I’ll be working on these unplanned projects and finishing up the planned projects.

What happened to the cabinets?

If you have been following along, you will remember that this post was supposed to be about my painted cabinets. But, as the best laid plans proceed there are inevitably delays. For me, these delays were twofold. First, I ordered the wrong hinges. So I had to return the originals and wait for the correct hinges to arrive. Second, we had alot of rain here in Alabama. Because I selected an oil based paint for my cabinets, I needed to spray them outside. But with rain, that was a no go. Fortunately, our countertops were installed this week. So welcome to Week 6…countertops!

It took me so long to embrace the white farmhouse craze but once I got there, I was all in. I wanted pristine white countertops! Perhaps a little sparkle would be nice. I can’t believe the selection of white countertops that are available! Mr. Blu and I narrowed down our choices to:

Mr. Blu was not feeling the stark white countertops…even with the little sparkle. I was shocked, right?? Who doesn’t love a little sparkle! Mr. Blu wanted the white cabinets but thought that white countertops would be way too much white. So here is the one we selected:

We thought the slight tan almost looked like copper and hoped it would help highlight our sink. We were right!

Like the floors, which you can read about here, I didn’t want to put anything on my counterops. We went days without using them. Finally, I moved the coffee pot onto the countertops. The the carousel of cooking untensils. Why is it when you get new countertops, you suddenly need brand spanking new utensils and accessories and and all things copper and Tuscan??? Focus! First things first! I believe that accessories were invented so that a room is never really finished. Am I right???

Thank you Sinkology!

This week’s showstopper is my new Hammered Copper Farmhouse Sink! She is also the inspiration for this entire kitchen upgrade. A great big shout out to Sinkology for this lovely fixture!

It’s funny how one item can really set the wheels in motion on a project. This sink dictated what appliances, floors, hardware, countertops, and finishes were used in my kitchen project. I won this beauty from Sinkology at The Haven Conference last summer in Atlanta. I had to chose from three gorgeous farmhouse sinks in three different finishes. Sinkology has a wonderful selection of all kinds of sinks. You can review my options Here. I selected the Courbet sink!

Installation Plans for an Undermount Copper Sink

The only drawback to installing a farmhouse sink, in my opinion, is that you have to alter your sink cabinet to fit the farmhouse style if you desire an undermount sink. My sink could be installed as a drop in or an undermount. Since I have been dreaming of an undermount, the drop in was not an option. I contacted a local countertop and cabinet company to take a look at my current sink and give me an estimate of what was needed to fit the cabinet for my copper farmhouse sink. They were kind enough to come out during the pandemic and promptly measure and provide a reasonable estimate.

Limit the Modifications

It is important to measure the width, depth and length of the current sink and cabinet to ensure that your cabinet can be modified. My original sink choice was the biggest, baddest sink in the catalog. However, I soon realized that my 36″ current sink cabinet would not accommodate such a large vessel. Additionally, the larger sink was 9″ deep. Since my cabinet has two doors below the sink, it was critical to select a less deep sink. Otherwise, I would have to either replace the cabinet or modify it more extensively to reduce the size of the doors. Neither of these options were in my budget so I decided to go with the sink size that required the least amount of modification.

The local company made the following modifications at a reasonable price:

• measure and cut existing countertop to install the undermount hammered copper farmhouse sink.
• modify sink cabinet to hold the farmhouse sink. This consisted of cutting sections out of the original cabinet to form fit the signature front apron of the farmhouse sink.
• build supports (they called it a cradle) to reinforce the sink from below the countertop. Farmhouse sinks are traditionally larger sinks and consequently can hold a greater volume of water and kitchen necessities like pots, pans, dishes, etc. Therefore, the sink must be adequately supported from below to handle the weight . With a drop in sink, the countertop acts to support the sink. With an undermount, a structure must be installed below the countertop for support.
• install filler on the front sides of the sink apron.

Once the cabinet modification was complete, the sink sat nicely in the cradle and was ready for the plumber to hook up the water and faucet.

Faucet Installation

As part of my winning prize package from Sinkology, I selected the Ashfield pull down faucet from Phister. It is beautiful! I can’t wait to see it with the new countertops.

My plumber came the next day and quickly installed the drain and water lines. I placed a piece of scrap wood across the back of the counter and drilled a hole so that my plumber could install the faucet.

Once the countertops are installed, Mr. Blu will simply reinstall the faucet. He has skills in this department since, as a kid, he helped is grandfather with his plumbing business.

I did some additional filling and sanding of the small pieces that were installed at the front apron of the sink. Now I am ready to paint the cabinets.

Final Delivery

Guess what was finally delivered this week??!

Of course I used it immediately…

…with all of the necessary staples!
