Some of the new skills we shared with you this year are mastering numerous paint techniques and finishes, creating garden art, working with cork fabric, creating frames for mirrors, altering and repairing furniture, restoring finishes on furniture and creating faux finishes, creating interest with stencils, using transfers, honing your decoupage skills, how to upholster. 

Here is peek back at some of the Team’s favorite Thrift Store Decor projects for 2023. I’m sharing my favorite project from each team member. At the end is a compilation of all of our projects from this year.

Renewing Family Furniture

There is just something about taking a well loved piece of furniture and transforming it into something fresh to love all over again. This really is the essence of this group. And my MIL’s bench is a perfect example. I guess at the holidays approach, these sentimental items mean a little more. This little bench sits at the piano in our living room among our 3 full sized Christmas trees. Flo loved her holidays. It’s only fitting that her bench be prominent where our family gathers.

Why I Love the Thrift Store

I can’t share a roundup of 100+ thrift store decor posts without talking about the thrift store and the art of thrifting! While I don’t get out to the thrift store all that often any more, writing this post rekindled my love for used and vintage things. Check out this post for some great tips and insights to wandering the aisles of your favorite thrift store.

Vintage Jewelry Art

The one thing every thrift store has in common is an overflow of common things. So many picture frames, candle sticks, kitchenware, furniture and decor items. But it’s the odd things that catch your eye. And it is the low prices that encourage you to return. Couple this with a taste for the creative and you have yourself a passion. So, when my friends and I are inspired by some of these fabulously priced common items, we love to share how we used them for practical and thrifty use in our decor. Hopefully, you will find some inspiration!

Speaking of picture frames.  I used some thrift store vintage frames to create custom art with old costume jewelry.   

Thrift Store Picture Frames Customized

Never again buy a brand new picture frame. Christy from Our Southern Home teaches us how to customize thrift store picture frames specifically for your home. Whether making a frame darker or adding some gold accents, you can transform a frame in just minutes while saving big bucks at the same time.

Cheese Dome to Decor

Pam from House of Hawthornes has a knack for grabbing the everyday item and transforming it into something fabulous.  Her choice of colors and seasonal items really makes her projects shine.  From garden decor to wall art, Pam can repurpose literally anything.

I mean, this cheese dome could be used for any holiday by switching out the chachkies and paint colors.

Upholster a Chair

I couldn’t resist sharing this additional project from Pam. Grab those worn chairs with great bones and create something stylish and lovely!

Side Tables and Stencils

Side tables and accent tables are more items that are always plentiful in thrift stores. Carlene from Organized Clutter has mastered the art of transforming that ugly dated table into something chic and fabulous. Her secret is great paint and highlighting the piece with a stencil to really make it unique. No thrift store item is off limits to Carlene when it comes to stencils. You will be amazed at how a single stencil, be it simple or ornate, can add interest to a project. Looking to take an item to the next level? Custom Artwork

Sara from Sadie Seasongoods is that hip chick strolling the thrift store aisles with an eye for Mid Century Modern meets practicality. Her blog should be renamed Sara Sees because she can see into the soul of a thrift store item with one glance and restore it to a new and unimagined purpose. Sara’s vision is amazing and her ability to take a mundane item and transform it into contemporary fab is incomparable. And, she has a fabulous talent for creating artwork from unlikely sources in the thrift store.

Hanging Candy Dish

Kathy from Petticoat Junktion has a true love of things vintage and/or rusty. I love when she takes an item intended for specific use and juju’s it up. Take something simple and use it in another manner. She shows you how to change the color or cover the rust and revitalize you well loved and well used vintage treasures.

Thrift Store Decor Mirror Update

You can completely change the look of an item with just a little paint. Maryann from Domestically Speaking shares all of the tips and tricks and insights she used to create a stunning focal point out of a drab and dated mirror. Use these tips to paint just about any thrift store decor find and create your own stunning accessories. With a little practice, you can become a pro. No more walking past those old and ugly mirrors. Look at them with renewed interest and renew that finish!

Vintage Rattan Trunk

Gail from My Repurposed Life knows her way around any power tool, spray gun, and workshop. She is the master of simplifying building projects and can transform salvaged furniture pieces into something practical and useful with a just few screws and some wood glue. Here is another simple makeover with all of Gail’s detailed instructions. Gail has a knack for detailed tutorials that are super easy to follow. I don’t know why, but after reading one of her tutorial posts, I always feel like I can build a tiny house in my driveway. Be sure to scroll through her other projects!

You know I can’t complete a round up of my favorite projects without a succulent project. Kristin from My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia made the most darling succulent display. This is definitely on my list for spring.

My finds for the day

Recently I visited our local thrift store to find some treasures for an upcoming Thrift Store Swap.  Here are some of the items I found:

Vintage mail station with 3 hooks. 

Sweet little wrought iron rocker.  Perhaps this is a salesman sample? It seemed to be made of too good of quality to be a child’s toy.

This metal and wooden planter has nice embossing and is quite decorative.

Some days are hit or miss for great items.  Today there were incredible buys on chairs…$10 each!  But, alas, to big to ship.

I’m pretty sure this is wine rack.  But I love the industrial look of the metal.  I can think of several possibilities for this.

This is just a simple tray but could be transformed in many different ways using many different mediums.  Lots of possibilities here.

Another great chair!  I had to walk away as I have too many upholstery projects waiting for my attention.  See my first pathetic attempt at upholstery here.  And view my contest winning chair transformation here.

Just an old jewelry box.  It is missing a drawer but just think of all the ways we use full size old chests with missing drawers.  

This full sized bench would be very difficult not to mention expensive to ship to Arizona.  I bought it anyway…project for me!

Thrift Store Swap 5 Spring Edition

From these items, I selected two to send to my Thrift Store Swap partner, Heather who blogs at One Crazy Ride. in Arizona.  Heather just celebrated her 2 year blogging anniversary.  Congrats girl!  I love the variety on Heather’s blog but I am particularly loving her signs an crafty projects.  With 3 young children it is amazing that she has time for these wonderful projects let alone her fantastic blog!  One of my favorite things to do is make signs for my store The Blue Building Antiques. There are nine bloggers participating in Thrift Store Swap 5!  What’s fun about this group is that there is a variety of gals with different specialties…several furniture gurus, family bloggers, etc.  I can’t wait to see all of the projects!  Each blogger finds two items totaling $10 and ships it to her partner.  Each blogger also receives a surprise package containing 2 items purchased for a total of $10.  We then have a few weeks to work on our projects.  The swap culminates with a blog hop in which all of the participating bloggers reveal their repurposed and upcycled items.  This edition of Thrift Store Swap goes live on March 27, 2017.  Be sure to check back here on March 27th.  You are sure to find some great ideas for your own transformations!

The lovely Jeanie Emmert from Create and Babble has organized this little challenge to create something using our SWAG (Stuff We All Get).

It might seems silly, but I was simple enamored by these tin snips that were in my SWAG bag!  They are from M-D Building Products, Inc.  via Home Depot.  Oh the possibilities for creating rusty treasures.

I grabbed some metal from an old barn.  The barn belonged to my friend Gina Luker from The Shabby Creek Cottage.  Her dad and grandfather had built it years ago.  Gina was building a new studio where the barn stood so she graciously offered me some of the salvaged vintage metal walls.  Here is a project I previously completed with the barn metal.

I traced a large circle onto the metal and used the tin snips to cut out a circle.  The snips cut relatively easily through the old metal.  This was much easier than I had anticipated.

The cut ends were not as sharp as I had anticipated either, but I still sanded the edges anyway.  I used my sandpaper from 3M that was in my SWAG bag.

You should ALWAYS wear gloves when dealing with metal.  Metal tends to have tiny shards or splinters.   Wear your gloves AND safety glasses!  Please!  Every single time!

Here is my circle.  It is a little wonky, but that is the beauty of vintage materials.  The imperfections blend to make a one of a kind creation.

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out stencils for the numbers and hands for the clock.

I grabbed my black milk paint compliments of Plaid Enterprises.

I dabbed the black paint onto the stencils.  

And voila!

This project only took about an hour from start to finish!  I think I will make the numbers a little bit bigger and thicker next time!  But for now, I’m happy with this little prize!

One of my favorite quotes was from an 88 year old man who wandered the store slowly with his cane. I asked him if he was enjoying the store. He said, “Yes but I’m afraid to stand still cause you might put a price tag on me!”

Another customer and I had a conversation about seeing something you love and not grabbing it.  A common phrase overheard from customers is “I love it, but where would I put it?”  Jeannie’s response was “What life are you waiting to live???  Buy it!”

I have about 50 still tucked away awaiting a slow day where I can concentrate on these cute little signs. One of these days…

My middle son, III, bought me a Silhouette for Christmas. I love it! The only bad thing is that I don’t get to use it regularly. So every time I pull it out for a project, it seems I am starting all over again. I am now trying to use it twice a week so I stay sharp and the learning curve diminishes.

This week’s projects are to make 10 signs. I used several techniques.

Paint over vinyl letters

1. Apply a base coat to your sign. Allow paint to dry.
2. Cut the vinyl letters and apply them to your sign.
3. Burnish (rub the letters firmly onto the sign).
4. Paint over the vinyl letters and the sign with a second complimentary or contrasting color.
5. Allow paint to dry.
6. Peel vinyl letters off to expose the first color underneath.

Some details:

I use contact paper to make a stencil for my signs.  I used Magnolia Sky font and created my design.  I cut the vinyl on my Silhouette and use transfer paper to place the saying onto the sign neatly.

Here is one sign using the painted letters technique:

Create a stencil

1. Create a design on the silhouette.
2. Cut the vinyl.
3. Apply transfer paper.
4. Weed out the letters leaving just the stencil.
5. Place vinyl stencil onto the sign base.
6. Burnish.
7. Remove the transfer paper
8. Burnish again to reduce chance of bleed through
9. Use craft paint to fill in the stencil.  Use a dabbing motion with just a little paint on the brush

After paint has dried for about 10 minutes, remove stencil.

This sign was made with the stencil technique:

It was a little tedious weeding out the letters for both signs.  I will search for an easier font that will minimize the need to weed…haha!

Thrift Store Throwdown challenged 15 bloggers to find a treasure or treasures costing $15 and ship it to a partner blogger.  Each blogger was challenged to upcycle their item into something fabulous.   Read the details of how the Throwdown works HERE.  Check out all of the before photos. Today is the reveal for all 15 projects!!!

Here are the items that I received from Carrie at Lovely, etc.  I must admit that I was excited and relieved when they arrived!  I had lots of ideas running through my mind which was a good sign!

I had a few ideas but, to widen my choices,  I polled some of my customers at my store, The Blue Building Antiques and Consignment.  I thought this was a great idea since the vast majority of my projects involve paint.  Maybe I could venture into another media to work on these items!   We decided that these items would make a perfect Time Out Chair for someone’s precious little one.  Today my youngest of 5 turns 14!  But it seems like just yesterday when we had our little routines for resting and reflecting and trying to relax!  I thought this would be a darling little project!  I don’t usually do a lot of childrens’ items so this got my creative juices flowing.  AND…I just found out that my sweet niece is going to be having another precious baby boy soon!  I’m thinking that this will just be the beginning of more baby and children’s decor posts for me!

I started by painting the two items a wonderful teal color.  It is General Finishes Milk Paint in Patina Green!  (affiliate) I’ve provided the link at the end of this post.  Then I attached the frame to the chair using heavy L brackets.  This stabilized the chair so that the back could support some weight should Junior or Juniorette lean back while reflecting upon their choices.

Next, I added a back to the frame and sprayed it with Chalkboard paint.  Final step was to design a graphic and create a stencil using my Silhouette.   I wanted to put a sweet little saying into the frame so I found a few ideas on Pinterest and jotted down a few of my own.

And here she is…

I thought this would double as a great seat for a favorite doll or bear…since little ones are so precious and innocent and highly unlikely to need a Time Out Chair!

How Thrift Store Throwdown Works

A group of 15 bloggers have been challenged to go shop at their local thrift store!  Right???  How much better can this challenge get!   Each blogger must purchase an item or items totaling $15.00 and ship to another blogger who is participating in the challenge.  Each blogger must transform the item(s) that they receive into something fabulous!  The excitement culminates with 15 individual blog posts on what each blogger selected for their partner to transform and 15 more posts revealing how each blogger transformed their Thrift Store item!

My Happy Mail Arrived!

My package arrived and it was a good size!  What could it be???   My mind was racing as I attacked the box!

My items came from Carrie who blogs at Lovely Etc.  Carrie must have started her blog ages ago because she has a wonderful array of posts on DIY, decorating, upcycling, crafting and home tours.  Here are a few of my favs from my visit to her blog.  Carrie has a wonderful eye…get over there and check her out!

My package contained a darling little rustic stool!  I had all sorts of colors and textures going through my head as I removed it from the box.  I could relax a little now knowing that I didn’t have to upholster anything!  Check out my first upholstery experience HERE.

As I went to move the box, I realized there was something else inside!  Another goodie!  A beautiful vintage wooden picture frame.

Hmmm…more of a challenge to create something unique using both items!  My mind is racing with ideas!  I will be working on this project over the next few weeks.  Feel free to comment below on any ideas you might have!  I would love to have your input!

What do you think I selected at the Thrift Store?

I shopped at the thrift store that is one block from my store, The Blue Building Antiques and Consignment.  Convenient right??   And sometimes dangerous.

This thrift store has really raised it’s prices over the last few years.  It has gotten very difficult to find resellable items here.   However, every few weeks, if I am persistant, I hit the jackpot.  This trip was a good one.  Here are the items I found and selected for the challenge:

A silverplated serving tray for $9.99!  And this industrial-ish stool for $4.99.

Since I had to ship the items, I was somewhat limited on size and materials.  I found some great nightstands and side tables and chairs for $6.99 but shipping would be outrageous!  So I decided on the tray and the stool since they would be easy to package.  I also felt confident that these metal items would arrive for their makeover in good condition.    I shipped these babies off to Stephanie at One Mile Home Style.  Stephanie, like me, is DIY blogger.  She has some wonderful projects for you to check out.  I love this one on how to make pillows from a placemat!

I headed south to Pike Road AL on Friday for my annual work day (I say that jokingly cause this was anything but work) in helping the bloggers and vendors set up their spaces for The Market on Chapel Hill.  For the past 2 years, my first stop was at Miss Mustard Seed.  And I was so tickled to be able to help Marian and her assistant, Kriste, again this year.  Since there was less ironstone to unpack, I arranged the MMSMP display!  Yes, my friends, it DID look particularly splendid on Saturday!  Thank you!  All of that milk paint, bonding agent, hemp oil (in 3 fabulous sizes), tough coat, and wax was strategically and lovingly place into position by ME!  Can you believe I neglected to take a photo of such beauty??  Marian to the rescue…she certainly thinks of everything!

It is always a treat to watch Marian via her blog Miss Mustardseed start to piece together her displays several months in advance.  A piece here, some ironstone there, a vintage scale newly acquired…And it really is quite magical watching it all fall into place on the Friday before The Market on Chapel Hill.

Well, for a great portion of Friday and all of Saturday, I was an Urban Farmgirl!  Mary has such wonderful merchandise…a perfect mix of antiques, vintage, and handcrafted.  It was a treat to spend some time with a truly gifted entrepenuer.  Mary carries quite a few lines of items handcrafted by local artisans from her native Chicago area…handmade purses, signs, pillows and these wonderful pumpkins:

How about this antique printer’s cabinet??   Swoon!  This was the very first piece that sold!

Many of my favorites bloggers returned this year.  Here are some shots of Lucy’s Inspired.

Lucy has started bringing some architectural pieces to her shows.  These are in high demand!  How great are these??!!!

Another favorite of mine is Coastal Charm spearheaded by the lovely Linda Sikes.  Linda looked particularly proud this weekend as she was accompanied by her beautiful daughter Mary Clare and her wonderful husband.  Linda has several spaces at Antiques at the Loop in Mobile, AL.   What a talent for throwing vignettes together!

Several of the ladies who live in The Waters, the wonderful community that hosts this fabulous market, returned with wonderful furniture and accessories.  Here are a few pictures of their fabulous items:

The Waters resident Robin and her hubby had a fabulous supply of original watercolors on hand.  But this little guy was the show stopper!

Returning for her third year was Cara of Little Golden Fox.  Every year, her inventory just gets better.  Here are some of my favs:

Of all people, I know that if you snooze you lose at these shows.  I fell in love with this primitive bust and the beautiful tall wrought iron piece in the picture below.  But I hesitated and those babies were gone!

New to The Market on Chapel Hill this year is Olde Tyme Marketplace.  Beth and Rusty were an absolute joy to chat with and their space was filled with spectacular items.

I was overwhelmed!  Such wonderful vintage finds!  Authentic huge farmhouse signs, old metal drawers, windows, beautiful farm tables…and then I was stopped in my tracks!  There it was!  It called my name!  Over and over and over!  Do you see it???

On the right front corner of the table???   Seven years ago when I took over my store, The Blue Building, there was a beautiful antique trophy on consignment.  It was only about 10 inches tall but it was the bomb!  I sold it and have been kicking myself ever since!  Everywhere I go I have search for vintage trophies.  They are soooo hard to find!  And there it was!  Right in front of me!  The piece-de-resistance!  A gorgeous loving cup!  19 inches tall!  With “Paris” engraved on the front!  I screamed!  Right there under the tent!  I hugged Beth!  It was meant to be!  But could I bring my thrifty little self to pay actual RETAIL price for something????  4 hours (probably more) I debated!  I couldn’t stop thinking about it!  She was just sitting there, waiting for me!  And then it hit me…when would I EVER find another????   And just like that…she was mine!  Worth every single penny!

Have I mentioned how much I love The Market on Chapel Hill???   Imagine what YOU could find!  See you next year…put it on your list of musts!  You most certainly will NOT be disappointed!

Hats off to Layla from The Lettered Cottage and the wonderful group of ladies affectionately known as The Pike Road Ladies for hosting such a phenomenal event.

While last year The Chapel Market was a great success, this year was even more exciting! There were double the number of vendors! There was delicious catered food!  There were incredible buys and the vendors absolutely outdid themselves with their displays!  There were milk paint and chalk paint presentations!  I could not get enough of the vintage finds and pretty little things!  Seriously, I think I walked through the market about 20 times just looking and soaking in the inspiration!

Those other two beauties in the photo above were my companions for two days!  I had the pleasure of helping KariAnne from Thistlewood Farms and Laura from Finding Home with their booth.  Let me tell you that these girls are even MORE fabulous in person!

This is the Chapel before the excitement began:

I arrived at Pike Road on Friday morning.  I had offered to help Marian, Miss Mustard Seed with her booth setup and lend her a table for check out.  First on my mind was a photo op with the one and only Miss Mustard Seed.  Last year, I was so caught up in the excitement of helping her all day that I realized (too late, on the ride home) that I had never gotten a picture with her!

So, first things first:

Marian has got this market stuff down to a science.   She and her sweet assistant Kriste had done a preliminary layout in her studio back in Pennsylvania so all of us avid readers could get a preview of her space.  I helped unwrap ironstone, and if you know Marian–there was A TON of ironstone! Once everything was unwrapped, Marian simply fluttered around placing items in their perfect place.  Sadly, it only took about 2 hours for the entire booth to be unpacked and ready for shoppers!  I say sadly because my work was done…in 2 hours!!!  I enjoyed every second!

When you walked into The Chapel Market, the first booth you came to belonged to Thistlewood Farms and Finding Home.  I don’t know how it came to be, but there could be no better greeters than the vibrant and trendy combo of KariAnne and Laura.  The remainder of the day on Friday was spent helping these sweet blog friends set up their booth space.  We laughed and priced and laughed and staged and laughed and staged and priced and rolled t-shirts…which I got to model on Saturday!

The Chapel Market started early Saturday with the quaint community joining in the fun.  How about these beauties:

I visited with Kara Fox of Little Golden Fox.  Kara is MMSCP retailer.  We met last year helping Marian with her sales. This year Kara had her own booth!

I helped Lucy of Lucy’s Inspired for just a few minutes…I had to get my hands on some of that beautiful handmade jewelry!  She has the coolest industrial theme and she rocks it right into her jewelry.  So talented and creative.

The Urban Farmgirl caravan traveled all the way from Illinois.  Her space was rocking ALL DAY!

You can see why!

There are always a few people you meet at these events who stand out.  One of those was sweet Linda of Coastal Charm.  We chatted about the business, about trade shows, about merchandise, furniture, etc.  It was a pleasure to run into Linda throughout the day and I know we will be hitting some more Alabama shows soon!

Littleville Blue is located in Cullman AL and Lordy!  Did Teresa and Rena put on a show!

Shaunna West of Perfectly Imperfect had an incredible booth set up with chalk paint and milk paint for sale.  It was fun to listen to Marian give one on one instructions to first time customers…if only they knew!  And Shaunna’s crew never fails to create the largest and most incredible displays.  Where do they find these mammoth displays.

All in all, it was a fun filled day of meeting folks and making connections, wandering through vintage heaven, sharing stories, and absorbing inspiration!  I am soooo excited to get back to Blu and Yellow and get to work!  But I am secretly wishing that The Chapel Market 2015 was just around the corner!
